Since we live in the country (no traffic lights, freeways, chickens, no power during bad storms, you get the idea),
we have a cesspool. There is a C&C law that says any new building
ie, changing the footprint of the structure, you have to add a septic tank.
Since our house is new, but still the same "footprint" our existing cesspool stayed.
When we were going to add on (another post) we had a study done for the septic tank
and would have done it. Since there isn't any building here, we still have our cesspool
We've never had it pumped out and hubby tries to cover it up.
We try to save water, like buying a front loader (65% less water usage), not using
the waste disposer often. Every month for the last 5 years, we've put a box of "Ridex"
down the toilet. This is supposed to keep your cesspool "healthy". These
boxes are $7.99 each, but figured it was worth it.
Our neighbors just had their cesspool pumped out. The pumper guy told them all the
regular things to do to keep it healthy, but he also said to add 1 packet of this every month...
3 month supply= $2.79!
(cesspool= waste goes into a huge hole and is leached into the surrounding ground. Little organisms like to eat it all.
septic tank= waste goes into an actual tank that needs to be pumped out. Septics are supposed to be better for the environment, no ground waste. Cesspools can fill up and not drain or leech fast enough that's what can cause problems/smells)
