May Day performances in Hawaii are a BIG deal. There really
isn't anything like it on the mainland. Not even Christmas shows.
Most schools do them every other year because they are such a huge deal.
So this was the year that Waialua Elementary put on their May Day.
I've been to 4 at Waialua (and some at other schools) and this
was by far the best!
All of the practicing and work really paid off.
Mr. Moore, principal
Ms. Tumua, our "Tumua-of - All- Trades"
Kumu Sturm,
the lady who puts the whole thing together
good to see old friends....
Mrs. Millwood waiting for the show to start
a color guard by our military partners
opening with a conch shell blowing
the Royal Court
a princess representing each island escorted by her father or grandfather
May Day King
May Day Queen and her dad. I was so happy to see that she was wearing
a crownflower crown...she looked so royal
some of the distinguished visitors. Can only see the top of her crown,
but it was Miss Hawaii USA, a Waialua grad
A-9 doing their "Auhe ami and slide" hula
these are the shirts they made on their field trip a few weeks ago.
the Royal Court up on the stage
(isn't the stage great!) It's things like this
that we wanted a stage. Two years ago, I wrote
about it here.
It really was worth it.
