A Reunion of Sorts...

Last week I was at Kono's and I heard someone call my name.
It turned out to be one of my hula sisters from California.  They own a
place here in Haleiwa and were here for two weeks.  I called
Dave and Iris and we set up a time to have a potluck at their place,
which is on the beach at Kaiaka.

There was a ton of food...
Kalbi ribs, fried rice

one of my favorites, Spam pancake (thank you Iris)

We brought Paalakai chicken (of course)

It was nice to hang out on the grass in front of their place

Mahalo Kathy and Terry for having us
over for a hula sister reunion...
It sure was nice.

Sunset dinner...

Last year at about the same time our good friends the Iwanas and the Nitchmans came out
for dinner.  We decided to do it again this year with an added couple. Since this was a bye
week for UH football, it seemed perfect. The weather
had been so nice up until Saturday, when it was hot and humid.
We headed down to Kaiaka and set up our little table.
Food was the center of attaction again (or as always).

The rainbow was beautiful, but the dark sky was not.

Paalakai fried chicken, Kahuku corn, Paalakai bakery butter rolls, musubi,
and Benita's famous Mac Nut Brownies!
What could be better?
Right after I took these pictures, the rain started.  We stayed a while since it was
more of a mist and it was warm, but finally had to retreat back to our house.
In any case, good food, good friends means good fun!
Thanks again guys for coming "all the way out to the North Shore!"

Dog Beach

The other day at Kaiaka there were several groups of dogs that were enjoying the
water along with everyone else.  These dogs just seemed so happy to
be on the beach and swimming.

Here I've never seen anyone say anything about the dogs in the water.
I've watched the owners and they are very good about picking up any poo
on the beach and just good about letting their dogs enjoy each other.
We have dog parks here, but not any specific "dog beaches" and it seems to work out just fine.

Secret?

I didn't realize that Kaiaka was such a "secret spot".  My hula sisters were asking me where I swam, and I told them about this place and showed them a photo.  They were shocked that such a beautiful spot was empty...where were all the tour buses? Guess Kaiaka really is a little secret!

Good friends + good food= Good Times!

Last night after many, many months of trying to get together, our good friends from town FINALLY made it out to the North Shore.
We brought dinner down to Kaiaka and waited for the sunset.  It was the most perfect night.  The weather was perfect (so much so that we stayed down on the beach until after 9pm), the food was the best...Paalakai fried chicken, homemade cole slaw, homemade spam musubi, homemade kim chee, a yummy egg dish, Paalakai butter rolls and my lemon poke cake.

Gary and Benita live in Ewa and Dave and Iris live in Hawaii Kai.  They were amazed that there wasn't really anyone on the beach (a few people swimming and another family bbqing).  The reason we stayed on the beach was that (other than it was so stinkin' nice) were all of the stars.  You just don't see stars like that in town.

Thanks guys for coming "all the way out here" it was worth the wait and the drive!
