Flashback Friday

Not sure exactly when this was.  I was in Waikiki for the summer and two friends from

school also happened to be there.  I told them how to find me on the beach. I would give people

directions like ..."in front of Duke's, to the right of the canoe, last row of chairs..." and

they'd actually find me in that exact spot!

I think we went up to have lunch at Duke's and they spent the day with me in Waikiki.







Fried Rice

One of the best places to get really good fried rice is right here in Haleiwa at

Malama Market. 

Their fried rice is full of flavor.  This probably comes from the bacon, spam and Portuguese sausage

that they've got mixed in there.  The regular kamabuku and green onions are also plenty.

First thing in the morning when they open, there's usually a line of people waiting for this fried rice.

Add a little egg and you're good to go.

Did I mention...it's only $1.99 for a mini!  So ono and a deal!!!

Pa'ala'a Road

There's a short-cut road that goes from Haleiwa Beach Road to Kam Hiway (at Mc Donalds).  I love this street!

It's a mix of old houses, new houses, cows, Buddhist Temple, octagon house,

Sr. Citizen housing and just local families.

During the summer, at lunch time you see people parked in the shade of huge trees.

These hidden gems are one of the best things about living in the country!

Miso soup

Since I've been sick, I've been craving miso soup.  I just couldn't send hubby out for the ingredients (he'd

already reached his limit of patience looking for "Mexican Wedding Soup" (which is REALLY Italian Wedding).

My dear friend Trisha appeared at our door with a huge container of still warm MISO SOUP!

She'd put some clams in it and it was yummy.

I was in love!

What is it about Miso Soup anyway that makes you feel better? The saltiness? The tofu?

All I know is that I'll now keep the ingredients handy!

Local Girl makes it BIG...

For the last few months Lauren and I have been trying to guess

who we thought the next American Girl Doll of the Year 2011would be.

They have a friend who works for AG and because of a confidentlalty agreement couldn't tell...only that they'd "love her".

On the morning of the 28th on the front page of our newspaper, there it was, the announcement!

We love her back story, about sharing the Aloha Spirit

and growing up in Hawaii on the island of Kauai.  Our newspaper

article said that AG had actually consulted local Hawaiian experts on

certain things to make sure they got them right.

the ariel fireworks ban.
