Feels like...

Since I'm in Southern California and there are Santa Ana winds, this is what my skin, nose and throat feel like.

There's supposed to be some rain and cold coming.  No relief even then, so cold have to have the heater on!  I'll just have to buy more lotion and allergy pills.!

Aloha and a hui hou Billy

Our friend and neighbor, Billy, will be deployed this week to Iraq.  This is the second time that he's been gone since we all have lived here.  Last Saturday another neighbor had a little party for him.  Thanks Christine for such yummy food (the squash wontons were to die for).  This was a great chance for all of us to just hang out.  It was a beautiful night, with a full Autumn moon and no rain.
When Billy was gone before, his wife Molly spent pretty much the whole time inside the house.  I hope it will be somewhat easier this time, since she knows more people over here.

So Billy, thank you for going over there and doing your job so that all of us have freedom.
Terry and I both appreciate it.
fondest aloha and a hui hou

Judge and Kawena

Last night I attended another Moody grandson's backyard wedding reception.  It was such a beautiful evening.  The moon was so full and the weather was just perfect.
This was really a blending of two North Shore families.  Kawena's parents are life long residents of Haleiwa/Waialua.  So once again, it was an occasion to see people from our community...church, school, Realtors and the list goes on.  It was good fun.

(this little two-story house in the upper right corner, below...this is where the newlyweds will be living.  It started as a playhouse for kids and was made into this little charmer for them)
Mahalo Judge and Kawena for letting me a part of your happily ever-after!

Saturday morning hula

Saturday morning hula starts with climbing these 31 steps...

It really is worth the drive into Kaimuki every Saturday.

Flashback Friday

Not sure about the dates of these, but I think Zach is now a senior in high school.  I really don't think their moms look any different.

Sally Moses and her daughter Maluhia Moses
Chris Farwell and her son Zach

When I look at all these pictures, I miss those blue umbrellas that were always such a part of Waikiki in those days...the putting up, the taking down and the packing away.

Peg and David

(I just found these pictures when I was looking for something else)
Many, many months ago our dear friend Peg called and was asking me about some hotels, etc for August in Waikiki.  As it got closer to the time and during one of our phone conversations, I realized she wasn't coming with her sister but her "special" friend, David.
So hubby and I went to pick them up (after about a two hour delay leaving LAX).  While waiting for their bags, Peg asked me to save a date in February 2011. Needless to say this was all very exciting!!!
So while they were here, hubby and I (mostly me) made a lot of trips into Waikiki.  As part of the whole Waikiki experience we ate Hula Pie on the beach.  We couldn't even remember the last time we had done that!
We went to some of our favorite places, the Counter, which he said was the "best burger he'd ever had". David was game for anything!  That made it so fun.
Unfortunately, they also spent what seemed like a lot of time at Straub Hospital.
I had to take a picture, even though it does look like their having way too much fun!
For my birthday we went to The Willows.  Had a great dinner.  During their stay here in Hawaii, hubby and I were trying to convince them to just go ahead and get married here.  So much cheaper, they were already here, etc, etc, etc.  One of their kids had wanted them to wait a year!!!! What? When you're our ages, a year is way too long to wait for anything!
So at the Willows they pretended to "tie the knot".  Peg and I planned a way to put it on Facebook that we know probably gave the girls a fright!
Congrats Peg and David, we can't wait for the "real" deal.

Tripler

Last Friday, I took my friend to Tripler Army Medical Center.  I'd taken her before, but this time I decided to take some pictures because it's such a pretty view.

This is the front of the hospital looking west.  The original Tripler was built in 1902 and with additions became what it is today.  It serves ALL of the Pacific military personnel and their families.  It's so busy all of the time, so I guess that's why.
The view from the parking lot looking west towards the airport, Salt Lake and beyond.
Just beyond HNL, is Hickham Air Force Base, so there are all kinds of planes taking off and landing all the time.
There are two stories about why Tripler has always been coral (pink).  One is that since the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was pink, this hospital should also be.  The other one is that when they were getting ready to paint since the surrounding area of Moanalua was made up of red dirt, Tripler should also be painted a color close to that because it wouldn't take that long for the red dirt to stain it that color.

I've been on incoming flights where people actually think because it's pink, it is the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.  Guess they don't realize that the Royal sits right on the water of Waikiki.
Since I only go to Tripler as a visitor, it's not hard for me to appreciate the beauty of this place.

Flashback Friday...

When Traci was here in August, she was looking at some old photo books and scrapbooks I had made. She said "you really need to scan these and put them on Facebook".  So not only are they on Facebook, but also my little blog.
This was such a special time in Waikiki.  Today it's nothing like it was then.  All of these kids even today talk about the "magical" time it was.  There were some very special memories and friendships that came from that time.  So maybe every Friday for awhile, I'll be able to recapture some of that time.

Our Hero...

GEOFF
Today Geoff and some other guys rescued another surfer at 54th Street in Newport.
We are so proud of him.  Like his sister said, "always knew you were a hero".
He was meant to be there today. What a gift he gave that man!

 (thanks to Driftwood Photography Studio)

Geoff is a great son, brother, husband and now a father of two.
Above all else he is and always will be our

Not your average...

School lunch.
Today it was turkey pastrami on a whole wheat bun, fruit, milk and sweet potato fries!
Everything is made right in the Waialua Elementary School kitchen and it's quite an operation.
There was an option for the adults, they could get a yummy salad along with everything else.  The salad had home-made croutons!

Some of the girls enjoying their lunch.  The kids really did like the fries they all told me.
Nothing made at a central kitchen here.  You might also notice that they actually eat inside...no outside eating here, even when it rains they stay inside here and play games.
Gotta love these country schools.

At war...

Hubby is at war (again) with the chickens.  Since the crazy neighbors continue to feed the chickens, there are TOO many chickens.  They have ruined our flower beds, under-mined the trees, dug up whole areas of ground cover and are just a pain in the neck.  This isn't only our problem, it's the whole neighborhood.  Everyone has found ways to go after them.  The dogs on the street have actually gotten in on it.  If you know hubby, you know he takes his yard very, very seriously!

On Mondays when Hubby is home working in the office all day, he's launched a full out attack.  As soon as the chickens cross into our yard, he's out there...
 hiding in the bushes.
He's done a pretty good job of scaring them out of the yard.
When they see him coming they will actually run now.

So far he hasn't shot his eye out with the Red Rider.
Oh the joys of living in the country!

Keep Calm...

I decided I just might have to send away for this.
Funny how something from the 1930's is so important today.
Maybe have it printed on sticky notes just to stick everywhere.

Cooling trend!

Oh yes indeed...looks like there might be a night-time cooling trend comin' out way.  Probably not a good idea to get out a blanket just yet.  Even have some pretty good trades blowing.
Gotta love Fall!

Ken's

It took me about 6 months after moving here to find someone to cut my hair.  I started going up to Wahiawa, but the drive (all of 10 miles) and trying to get in just wasn't something I wanted to deal with.
I started asking people who also had short hair, who cut their hair and almost everyone said "Ken".
Now on a monthly basis I give him a call and he tells me when to come in, "can you come right now" or "come in an hour".  Ken cracks me up.  He's a wealth of information about the goings on here on the North Shore.
The waiting area...everyone turns into a friend out there.
It's worth a summer haircut just to get into the airconditioning!
Ken himself.  Always with a smile
The best haircut I've ever gotten comes from this little shop in Haleiwa!

Dillingham Ranch

Driving out towards Kaena Point, across from the polo field is Dillingham Ranch.  It was building 1897 by the Dillingham family, one member of this family owned the company that dredged out Honolulu Harbor.  This family I would think may have come here as missionaries, but I don't know for sure.
Anyway, to get back to the ranch.  We have friends who have lived and worked on the ranch for many years as grounds keepers.  One day I was out there and just took some random pictures.  Recently they had to move because of a new direction the ranch is taking.  You can read more about what the ranch is like today here.  It was used a lot during the filming of LOST. There had been some talk about sub-dividing the ranch into huge lots so that people could build on them.  I hope that's not the case.
Many of these trees are 100+ years old.  These are what has helped keep it cool during the heat of the summer.

The ranch was never used for farming, always for cattle and horses.  Even today there are fields full of horses.

 Huge grove of coconut palms
Part of the "old" house can be seen in the background.  It must have been something to have come to a party at Dillingham Ranch in the early 1900's!
Maybe these were garages long ago.  Since I took these pictures, this structure has now been torn down.

Can you imagine how long it took to drive out here from town?  Even if they took the train that used to stop in Haleiwa, it would have been a long ride out to the ranch from there.
